Welcome to the UK alumni association of the Japanese government sponsored ‘Ship for World Youth Program’. A fantastic youth scheme aiming to:
- Foster mutual understanding
- Develop international friendships
- Broaden young peoples’ global perspective (Age requirements 18 – 35)
- Install a spirit of international co-operation
All aboard a beautiful ocean liner the Nippon Maru for a duration of approximately two months, sailing either the Pacific or Indian Ocean.

(Specs of Nippon Maru are: 166.6 m length with a gross tonnage of 21,903 tons. Equipped with 202 cabins, a hall, a saloon, a lounge, a library, a Japanese style room, a deck for exercise, a swimming pool, a clinic, a beauty salon, laundry rooms, a dining salon etc)
What do we aim to do?
- Encourage a greater diversity in the participants from the UK
- Encourage a greater understanding and appreciation of Japan
- Develop community and international alumni activities
What is SWY?
SWY is a unique initiative organised and implemented by the Director-General for Policy Planning and Co-ordination,part of the Cabinet office of the Japanese Government. It is an annual initiative that commenced in 1998, involves 12 different countries and has been run every year, sailing east or west alternately.
The UK has participated in the Ship for World Youth 4 times since its
establishment. We get chosen roughly every 4-6 years. Please sign up
