How can I prepare?

Well first of all you need to be selected.

The UK is selected to go approximately every 4 – 5 years, depending on the other countries chosen, political climate and the level of SWY alumni activity present in the country that year.

9 young people, between the ages of 18 to 30, are chosen by the Japanese Embassy in London on behalf of the IYEO (International Youth Exchange Organisation), in Tokyo

1 person (usually over 30) is chosen as the National Leader (NL) to co-ordinate the UK delegation.

The scheme is advertised nationwide in national newspapers and youth magazines approximately 6-8 months in advance.

What is the selection criteria?

Criteria for selection is based on age, youth work/voluntary work history, educational and developmental interest and work experience. The scheme looks for individuals wanting to get more involved in youth development and intercultural exchange, so bias is towards those who want to actively participate pre, during and post SWY.

Your application will be considered by the Japanese Embassy. If successful, you will be invited down to London for an interview, from which 10 will be chosen.

Ex-Participants will take an active part in selection and help you prepare for SWY at home.

Who to speak to?

The UK SWY Alumni Association comprises of Ex-participants of previous SWY programs. This network supports future participants, giving advice from what to take, what to expect as well as the do’s and dont’s of Japanese and foreign culture.

Members are spread around the UK and are contactable through the UK SWY web – This is best possible way to prepare for life on-board the ship!
